It has been raining most of the afternoon and Ben is away for the weekend at a men’s retreat for AIM and other missionaries.   The boys and I were playing games in the living room when I saw something flying around and asked Ian to please get that bug out of here.  “Mom, there are a lot of them in here.”  “What are they?”, I asked.  “Flying ants, termites”, he replied.  “How are they getting in here?”  We checked the windows and doors.  All shut.  Oh my goodness!  So many bugs!  “Mom, they are coming I from under the front door.”  I ran over and sure enough, hundreds of these disgusting creatures were invading my house through the space under my door.  They were flying everywhere.  My first instinct was to shut off the porch light and then I ran into the kitchen and grabbed some vinegar and poured it all along the floor inside the door.  They seemed to stop pouring in.  Then I went around turning off any lights in the house except in the living room.  “Start catching them guys!”  The boys starting catching handfuls.  “Can we eat them mom?  Will you fry them up for us?”  “No!  I just want them out of here!  Hurry up and don’t stop until they are all gone!”  (They have heard stories from other missionary kids about eating the flying ants when they come with the rains.)  So they started throwing them in the toilet in the bathroom and then running back to the living room to catch more.  I joined them the best I could while carrying the baby around with one arm and using my other hand to snatch two or three to deposit in our termite graveyard.  These bugs are about 1/2 inch long with a three inch wingspan.  After about 45 minutes and hundreds of bugs captured, it seemed that we had caught them all.  I can not even imagine how many more would have invaded if I had not thought to pour the vinegar around the door.  Now to see if they start pouring back in tonight or in the morning or if we successfully stopped them.  Not the way I wanted to end the day and of course, all the fun happens when Ben is gone!  image
